Suddenly everything went dark. The swiftness of it, the lurching and overwhelming feeling of complete wrongness, it almost feels like how you’d imagine death felt like, if it wasn’t for the constant prickling sensation and ringing in your ear. Your skin feels hot and blistered, and despite your best attempts, you simply can’t seem to open your eyes. Then, a sudden sharp pain near the base of your skull, and a cacophony of words flood into your brain. Vocabulary, grammar, a sudden influx of English language floods your brain like distant memories, the feeling even more overwhelming and incapacitating than whatever you were feeling before.
After a while it ends. Pale white light floods your suddenly open eyes. Pine trees surround you, although the trees closest to you seem impacted by a large force, snapped or broken in places. Some of them are still smouldering, embers flaring off and being smothered by the all-encompassing cold. You also don’t seem to be alone, with plenty of other people looking exactly how you feel: Shellshocked, exhausted and extremely on edge. Some people even seem on the verge of mental breakdowns, a feral glint in their eyes betraying the fragility of their mind. Others are catatonic on the ground, if not worse. English stumbles over your unfamiliar tongue for a few minutes, but before long everyone who is still capable of speech is deep in discussion, and one thing becomes clear:
Nobody trusts each other, but to some degree you need to work together. The heat created by your arrival is dissipating quickly, and the frigid winds seem sub-zero, if the layer of snow that surrounds your circle of scorched earth is anything to go by. Shelter, fire, water, food, any and all of these must be taken care of soon, or the elements will have their tithe in corpses.
